Objectives & KPIsManagement system

Steer on measurable goals, from policy to improvement action

Here you manage your policy and the measurable objectives and KPIs that follow from it. You follow the chain from policy to objective, KPI and improvement action and see whether each goal is on track.

Features

What you do with Objectives & KPIs

An objective in five steps

A wizard asks in turn what the goal is, where it comes from, when it counts as achieved, how you measure it and who owns it. You link the first KPI straight away.

KPIs from three sources

A KPI value is entered manually, taken from a measurement plan or pulled automatically from a module, such as CO₂ emissions from Energy & Emissions or the number of incidents. Nothing is entered twice.

Status in four states

Each objective is on track, needs attention, off track or not yet measured. The worst-scoring KPI determines the status, and when the term is known, elapsed time is taken into account.

Trend and forecast

A small chart shows the latest measurements. From three dated measurements onwards, the system projects a forecast to the target year: will you reach the goal on this trend?

Improvement action when behind

When a goal is off track, the system suggests an improvement action, pre-filled for Actions. A needs-attention strip shows what requires action right now.

Policy chain and evaluations

The policy tab shows the objectives, KPIs and improvement actions per policy document, plus objectives without a policy. Recording an evaluation freezes the current state together with your conclusion.

In practice

How it works

  1. 1

    Record the policy

Create the policy in Document management with the policy document type, with version control, approval and read confirmation.

  2. 2

    Create an objective

Create a new objective, select the policy it comes from, define when it counts as achieved and link the first KPI.

  3. 3

    Measure

Record values yourself or let them come automatically from a measurement plan or module. The register and dashboard show status, overdue measurements and forecasts.

  4. 4

    Adjust

If a goal is off track, launch the suggested improvement action and update the improvement plan.

  5. 5

    Evaluate and close

Record evaluations according to the evaluation cycle. You can only close an objective with a conclusion and final value, choosing achieved, not achieved or stopped.

Implementing ISO 45001: a step-by-step plan for safe and healthy workISO 45001 is the international standard for an occupational health and safety management system. It helps you prevent accidents and work-related ill health rather than only recording them afterwards. This step-by-step plan shows how to put the standard into practice, from the first baseline to certification. VSME reporting for SMEs: what is it and how do you start?More and more clients, banks and supply chain partners are asking smaller companies for sustainability information. The VSME standard gives SMEs a clear way to share it. Here is what VSME is and how to get started. Improving safety culture: what it is, how to measure it and what worksImproving safety culture only works once you know what it is: the unwritten way people in your organisation think about safety and act on it, even when nobody is watching. You read how to measure it and what helps in practice. Measuring customer satisfaction: methods, good questions and what to do with the resultMeasuring customer satisfaction means asking customers at fixed moments what they think of your work, and doing something with the answer. You can do it with a survey, the NPS question, a conversation or by analysing complaints. Here you read which method fits when and how to ask questions that give usable answers. Management review: example with agenda, inputs and minutesA management review is the moment when top management checks whether the management system works and where it needs adjusting. Below you will find the inputs, an example agenda and short minutes, so you can build your own version right away. Analyzing context and stakeholders: approach with a worked exampleThe context of the organization consists of the internal and external factors that decide whether your management system achieves its purpose, plus the parties that expect something from you. A clear analysis shows which risks and objectives really matter. KPIs and objectives for quality, safety and environment: examplesGood KPIs and objectives turn a management system into a steering instrument: you know where you want to go and see in time whether it is working. This guide shows how to formulate an objective and gives examples for quality, safety and environment. Identifying environmental aspects: how to inventory and assess themIdentifying environmental aspects starts with a walk through what your organisation does and where it touches the environment. Here you will read how to inventory aspects, assess their significance and attach measures, with example lines for an environmental aspects register. The CO2 Performance Ladder explained: what it is and how to startThe CO2 Performance Ladder is a scheme with which organisations demonstrate that they map and reduce their CO2 emissions. You mostly come across it in tenders. Here you will read the idea behind it, what you record and how to start. Calculating your CO2 footprint as an SME: scope 1, 2 and 3 step by stepCalculating a CO2 footprint works with data you already have: gas, electricity, fuel and kilometres. Here you will read what scope 1, 2 and 3 are, how to calculate with emission factors and how to record a reduction demonstrably. Writing a QHSE policy: an example policy statement for ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001A QHSE policy is a short statement from management about what the organisation stands for on quality, safety, health and the environment, and what it commits to. It fits on one A4 page, provides the framework for measurable objectives and is known by everyone. Below you read what belongs in it, find an example text of about 120 words and see how to get from policy to objectives. Writing a process description for ISO 9001: structure, example and common mistakesA process description records for each process its purpose, its owner, what goes in and out, the steps you take, who does what, the risks and how you measure performance, usually on one or two pages. ISO 9001 asks for a process approach, but does not prescribe a fixed format. This guide shows which processes you have, what to include and what a worked example looks like.
Frequently asked questions

Questions about Objectives & KPIs

Where do the KPI values come from?

You choose per KPI: manual entry, a measurement plan or automatically from a module, such as CO₂ emissions from Energy & Emissions or the number of complaints, incidents or completed inspections. Values from other modules are used automatically.

What if an objective is not achieved?

The status turns red and the system suggests an improvement action. In the management review you decide to adjust course, change the goal or stop, and when closing you explicitly choose not achieved, with an explanation.

Can we nest objectives?

Yes. An objective can have a parent objective, and progress on the underlying goals rolls up to the main goal. Useful for department or site goals under an organisation-wide goal.

How many objectives make sense?

Better five to ten that you actually measure and discuss than thirty on paper. Each objective has an owner, a measurement rhythm and an evaluation rhythm.
