CO2 Performance Ladder

The CO2 Performance Ladder is an instrument with which companies map and reduce their CO2 emissions, and which clients can take into account when assessing tenders.

Explanation

The instrument comes from the Netherlands and is managed by an independent foundation, SKAO. A company maps its emissions, sets reduction targets, implements measures, reports on them and shares knowledge with the sector and other parties. A certification body assesses this.

The instrument is mainly used in construction, infrastructure and related sectors. Some clients give certified companies an advantage when assessing a tender. What exactly that yields depends on the tender. Check this with the client.

The requirements are revised periodically, so always work with the current handbook of the scheme owner. The CO2 Performance Ladder is different from a CO2 footprint: the footprint is the measurement result, the performance ladder is the framework in which you use that result to reduce structurally and to communicate about it.

Example from practice

A road construction company measures its emissions every year, sets a reduction target for fuel use and reports progress. A certification body assesses the system, after which the contractor can use the certificate in tenders.
