Explanation
In a toolbox talk a supervisor or foreman discusses one topic with the team, such as working at height, housekeeping or a recent near miss. It is short and close to the work, so people recognise it and join in.
You hold toolbox talks at a fixed rhythm, for example every month or week, but also when there is a reason, such as an incident, a new working method or a change of season. VCA and many clients expect you to organise them and to show who took part, when and on what.
A toolbox talk is not a training course and not a work start briefing. The work start briefing is about the work of that day or project, a toolbox talk about one safety theme. The best toolbox lets people talk instead of reading out a text, and ends with an agreement.
Example from practice
After two near misses with a forklift, the foreman holds a toolbox talk in the warehouse. The team discusses where it can go wrong, notes three agreements and signs for attendance.
