Work start briefing

A work start briefing is a short meeting before the work begins in which you go through the plan, risks, measures and division of tasks with the people doing the work.

Explanation

Before the work starts, the people who will do it get together. The supervisor goes through what will happen, which risks there are, which measures apply, who does what and what to do in an emergency. Afterwards everyone knows where they stand.

The briefing takes place at the start of a project or assignment and sometimes as a daily start. Participants sign for attendance so you can show that people were instructed. What is mandatory and how often depends on your client and the type of work.

The difference with a toolbox talk: the work start briefing is about this specific job, the toolbox talk about one topic. The difference with the LMRA: the work start briefing is a group conversation beforehand, the LMRA an individual check at the work spot right before the start.

Example from practice

Before a renovation in an occupied building, the foreman goes through the schedule, the cordoned-off zones, the evacuation route and the agreements with residents with the team. Everyone signs off.
