Explanation
The gate induction tells you what you need to know to be safe on a site: rules, hazards, emergency and evacuation procedures, mandatory PPE and who to call. You receive it before the gate, usually online or at the entrance, and a short test often concludes it.
Clients in sectors such as energy, industry, construction and infrastructure use gate inductions to make sure everyone who enters knows the basic rules. If you pass the test, you get access, often for a set period. Some sectors share one generic induction, others work with their own.
A gate induction gives general knowledge about the site. For the specific work you also need a work start briefing, a TRA and, for high-risk work, a permit to work. The gate induction does not replace those.
Example from practice
A subcontractor working on an industrial site for the first time completes the client's gate induction online beforehand, passes the test and shows the result at the gate to get in.
