Explanation
QHSE brings four topics under one roof: the quality of products and services, the health of employees, safety at work and the environmental impact. It covers policy, risks, procedures, inspections, audits and following up on what goes wrong.
The term comes from international business and is common in industry, energy, construction and with larger clients. In the Netherlands you often hear KAM or VGM instead, but the idea is the same. Variants such as HSEQ and SHEQ just shift the emphasis.
A QHSE manager or coordinator looks after the whole. Organisations use standards for it, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, and software to keep reports, audits and actions in one place. The aim stays the same: be able to show that you control what you say you control.
Example from practice
A manufacturer records complaints, near misses and environmental reports in one system, carries out inspections every quarter and discusses the open actions in the management meeting.
