RI&E: Risk Inventory and Evaluation

An RI&E is an overview of all risks to the safety and health of your employees, with an assessment of those risks and an action plan to reduce them.

Explanation

In an RI&E you map what can go wrong in your organisation (inventory), estimate how big and how likely each risk is (evaluation) and record what you do about it in an action plan. It covers the whole organisation: workplaces, machines, substances, lifting, work pressure.

In the Netherlands the RI&E is a core part of the Arbowet (Working Conditions Act): an employer with staff is expected to have one. Whether and how the RI&E has to be reviewed, and which sector instruments you can use, depends on your organisation and sector. Check the Dutch Arboportaal for the current rules.

An RI&E is not a one-off document. You keep it up to date when something changes, such as new machines, a move or an accident that reveals something new. A TRA works out one task in more depth, while the RI&E maintains the overall picture.

Example from practice

An installation company reviews the workshop, van and customer sites, notes among others noise, lifting and working at height, gives each risk a score and puts the measures with owner and planning in the action plan.
