Action plan (risk assessment follow-up)

The action plan (plan van aanpak, PvA) belonging to an RI&E is the list of measures: which risks you tackle, how, who carries it out and when it is done.

Explanation

An RI&E without an action plan is a list of problems without solutions. In the plan you record for each risk which measure you choose, who is responsible, when it has to be done and what the status is. In the Netherlands an action plan belongs with the RI&E.

You rank the measures by priority: big risks first. For each risk you first look, following the hierarchy of controls, at whether you can tackle it at the source, and only then at organisational measures or personal protection. The plan is a living document: completed actions are ticked off, new ones are added.

The term plan van aanpak is also used for a project plan; here it means the plan that goes with the RI&E. If a risk remains after the measures, you record it as a residual risk, with the reasoning for why you consider it acceptable.

Example from practice

The plan states: risk of lifting in the warehouse, measure to buy a height-adjustable pallet truck, responsible person is the warehouse manager, planned for next quarter, status in progress.
